Chicken Xacuti

Chicken Xacuti is a popular Goan dish that is commonly pronounced as Chicken Shakuti’.The use of poppy seeds and Kashmiri chillies is the highlight of this dish. This dish goes well with fresh baked bread or steamed rice. We would say that the dish is a little time consuming to prepare, but in the end, every second of time spent is worth the effort. The flavour turns out to be simply divine!

Ingredients

For Marination

  • 1 kg chicken
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4 tbsp ginger paste
  • 4 tbsp garlic paste
  • 1 cup coriander
  • 5 green chillies

For Xacuti Masala

  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 2 onions, sliced
  • 2 green chillies, chopped
  • 1 tbsp ginger paste
  • 1 tbsp garlic paste
  • 1 coconut, grated
  • 100 g coriander
  • 4 nos cinnamon
  • 1 stick cardamom
  • 1 tsp aniseed
  • 1 tsp black peppercorn
  • 1 tbsp poppy seeds
  • 1 tbsp coriander seeds
  • 10 kashmiri red chillies
  • 1 star anise
  • 2 tbsp nutmeg

Method

Step 1

In a pan, heat one tablespoon oil and fry coconut till it turns light brown. Transfer it to a grinder.

Step 2

Dry roast kashmiri red chillies, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, black peppercorns, fennel seeds, carom seeds, poppy seeds, cloves, cinnamon and star anise till fragrant. Add it to the coconut in the mixer jar and blend it well.

Step 3

In a bowl, marinate chicken with ground paste of turmeric powder, ginger, garlic, coriander, green chillies and salt.

Step 4

In a pan, heat the remaining oil and sauté onions till they turn brown.

Step 5

Add chicken and fry it on high flame for three to five minutes.

Step 6

Now add salt and mix it well. Add the masala paste and stir it again. Next, add three cups of water and give it a good stir.

Step 7

Add tamarind pulp and mix. Grate nutmeg over the chicken.

Step 8

Cover the pan and then cook for 30 minutes.

Step 9

Remove from pan and serve hot with roti, naan or steamed rice.
