Jhaal Muri is a typical Bengali street food that is enjoyed throughout the state; it is a close cousin of the famous Maharashtrian Bhel puri. ‘Jhaal’ in Bengal means ‘spicy’ and ‘muri is puffed rice – it is served in paper cones by the street vendors. Crunchy puffed rice along with minced veggies, peanuts, mustard oil and a blend of spices makes for an instant delight. Enjoy it with a cup of afternoon tea.

Ingredients
- 2 cups puffed rice
- ½ cup onion, chopped
- ¼ cup cucumber, chopped
- ¼ cup boiled potatoes, diced
- 1 small tomato, chopped
- 1 tbsp green mango, minced
- 1 tsp green chili, minced
- 2 tbsp peanuts, roasted
- 2-3 tbsp bhujia sev
- 3-4 tbsp fresh coriander leaves, chopped
- 2 tablespoons mustard oil
For Jhaal Muri Masala
- 2 tsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp black salt
- 1 tbsp roasted cumin powder
- 1 tsp chaat masala
Method
Step 1
Dry roast the puffed rice in a pan for 2-3 minutes, stirring continuously for extra crunch.
Step 2
Mix all the ingredients listed for the jhaal muri masala and store in an airtight container. Use as necessary.
Step 3
In a large bowl, combine puffed rice, chopped onion, cucumber, tomato, potato, green chillies, peanuts, coriander leaves, green mango, bhujia sev and toss to mix well.
Step 4
Add mustard oil and 1-2 tsp of prepared jhaal muri masala and toss again to mix well. Serve immediately with a cup of tea.

Tip: Make sure to serve it immediately, as with time the puffed rice will lose its crunchiness and will not taste good.
