After all, it is no secret that cake offers virtually no nutritive additions to the body. Too much icing is also a bad thing, so check with your doctor before you have a slice.

Your immune system is weakest when you are pregnant, so you must take care to avoid anything which might leave you with an infection. Even if the cake is a homemade one, there is a high chance that it might contain bacteria like salmonella, E.coli, Toxoplasma and many more. If any of these bacteria affect you, it can result in health conditions for the baby. Similarly, the raw batter sometimes forms great breeding grounds for bacteria. Therefore, avoid eating cake batter during pregnancy.

2. Weight Gain

Gaining too much weight over the course of pregnancy can make things difficult for you and the baby as well. Therefore, controlling your diet is very important. It will help you become healthier on the whole. Avoiding desserts like cake can go a long way toward helping you stay trim, and not add too many kilos to your frame.

3. Alcohol

Any form of alcohol is a strict no for pregnant women. It is a bad idea to consume cakes with alcohol during pregnancy since it can affect your baby adversely. Even though it is said that cooking neutralises any alcohol content, this might not always be true. Consuming the same could result in premature delivery and birth defects, too.

4. Unhealthy Supplements

Some cakes contain unhealthy supplements which are added as flavours or taste enhancers, and these may turn out to be bad for the baby.

If you are still craving for cakes, there is no harm in consuming them once in a while, in moderate quantities. Of course, skip any cakes that have or require alcohol in the preparation.

3. Yoghurt Cake

Yoghurt is an essential part of the diet of a pregnant woman since it contains dietary calcium, protein and good bacteria which can help in better digestion. Using yoghurt for cakes is a good idea, although you must make sure that the cake is consumed quickly. If such cakes are close to their expiry date, they might have already become breeding grounds for bacteria.

  • Consuming eggless cakes during pregnancy not mandatory. Eggs are not harmful to the child. However, make sure to check that they do not add any preservatives instead of the egg, as they could be harmful to the baby.
  • Bake cakes on your own as much as possible as it offers you better control over the ingredients going into it.
  • Ask for nutritional composition and general ingredients list in the cake, if you are getting it from a bakery.

Consuming cakes in small quantities is not harmful for pregnant women, and also helps them indulge their cravings for some time. However, make sure that the amount is in moderation, and you never go overboard with the quantities.
