Diaper Rashes in Babies – Prevention and Cure

Diaper rashes are one of the most common concerns for every mother. There can be many reasons why diaper rashes develop in babies. No parent wants to see their baby crying due to pain. In this article, I will be discussing the major causes of diaper rashes and the precautions to be taken.

Reasons for Diaper Rashes

Following are the few reasons due to which diaper rashes occur.

1. Not Changing Diapers

The diapers need to be changed after every few hours or when you feel it is soiled. Negligence with changing the diaper is the major cause of rashes.

2. Sweat

In summers, sweat can also be a cause of diaper rashes. It is advisable to not use diapers in summers or only during emergencies.

3. Frequent Passing of Stools

In some babies, this is also the reason they pass stools very frequently and it leads to more contact of water with the skin. If the skin is not properly wiped after cleaning, it may lead to rashes.

4. Using Poor Quality Diapers

Using poor quality diapers will also lead to rashes. You should always use good quality diapers for your baby like Pampers and Huggies and only when required.

Precautions To Be Taken

Here are a few precautions that need to be taken to avoid rashes and treat them:

1. Change Diapers

You should change the diaper of your baby after every 4 hours or as soon as it becomes heavy or soiled.

2. Keep the Area Clean, Dry and Moisturised

After every urine or stool, clean your baby properly and then dry his bottoms with a cotton towel as wet skin is ground for rash formation. Then apply oil to the area. Coconut oil or olive oil should be
applied as oil becomes a barrier between the skin and urine.

3. Avoid Using Wet Wipes

You should avoid using wet wipes because they have chemicals and do not clean as well as compared to water. You should use wet cotton to clean the baby and then wipe it with cotton/ towel/ cotton hanky. Wet wipes should only be used if you are going out.

4. Avoid Diapers

You should avoid using diapers at home since it is summer time and you can easily change and wash the nappies. The nappies don’t take much time to dry and can be easily changed and are cost effective too. Diapers should only be used when you are going out, otherwise no need to use diapers.

5. Wash Your Hands

You should wash your hands before touching your baby and after changing the nappy as unwashed hands can cause allergies. These are a few causes and precautions to be used. I hope this is helpful for your baby.
