Dear mommies and daddies, there are lots of things we hear frequently about the dos and don’ts of breastfeeding. After doing a lot of research, here are the myths surrounding breastfeeding.

Myth 1: Breastfed babies can’t be chubby

This is not true. My daughter is completely on breast milk and is a chubby child with a good weight in the 75 to 85 percentile as she drinks a lot of hindmilk. Breast milk is of two types- foremilk and hindmilk. Foremilk comes first and is mostly water and vitamins while hindmilk comes later and is thick and rich in fats and carbohydrates. Hindmilk is responsible for good weight and chubby babies. To give hindmilk don’t switch to another breast frequently. Let the baby linger on the same breast for a long time as this will help them to suck as much of hindmilk as possible. Please remember hindmilk can’t be pumped out with breast pumps, babies need to suck it.

Myth 2: Breastfeeding makes babies emotionally dependent on their mothers

This is not true. Yes, breastmilk helps in developing a stronger bond between mothers and babies but it doesn’t make babies emotionally dependent. Breast milk not only helps in comforting the babies to their new environment but it is also scientifically proven that breastfed babies learn language, laughter, and emotions more quickly while having their favourite food in their mother’s lap.

Myth 3: Breastfeeding is one of the reasons for postpartum depression in mothers

This is completely untrue. In fact, breastfeeding helps in fighting postpartum depression. Although breastfeeding is a tedious job, it requires a lot of patience and can cause a lot of fatigue, but it can’t cause depression. The main reason for this is, during breastfeeding, the mother’s body produces a lot of oxytocin which is a happy hormone. Oxytocin helps mothers not only to fight depression but also helps in strengthing their bond with the child. Breastfeeding also helps in reducing post-pregnancy weight quickly while post-pregnancy weight is one of the reasons for postpartum depression.
