A. Precautions to Take in Summer for Babies Summer can be harsh for babies, so it’s important to keep them cool, hydrated, and protected from heat-related issues like dehydration, rashes, and sunburn. 1. Keep Baby Hydrated ✔️ For Breastfed Babies (Below 6 Months) – Continue exclusive breastfeeding; no extra water is needed. ✔️ For Babies Above 6 Months – Give water, coconut water, buttermilk, homemade fresh fruit juices, and ORS if needed. ✔️ Avoid Sugary & Packaged Drinks – They can cause digestion issues. 2. Dress Light & Comfortable ✔️ Use loose, lightweight, cotton clothes to absorb sweat and keep the baby cool. ✔️ Avoid synthetic fabrics as they trap heat. ✔️ Use a wide-brimmed hat if stepping outside. 3. Protect from Heat & Sun ✔️ Avoid Direct Sunlight (10 AM to 4 PM) to prevent heatstroke and sunburn. ✔️ If going out, apply baby-safe sunscreen (only for babies above 6 months). ✔️ Keep baby in a cool, well-ventilated room and use fans or AC (but not too cold). 4. Prevent Summer Rashes & Infections ✔️ Give a lukewarm bath daily to remove sweat and prevent rashes. ✔️ Use a mild baby powder (talc-free) in skin folds. ✔️ Keep baby’s skin dry and change wet clothes immediately. ✔️ Avoid excessive diaper use—give diaper-free time to prevent rashes. 5. Light & Cooling Diet (For Babies on Solids) ✔️ Give seasonal fruits like watermelon, muskmelon, cucumber, and mango in moderation. ✔️ Include curd, buttermilk, and light dal khichdi to keep digestion cool. ✔️ Avoid fried, spicy, and heavy foods. 6. Ensure Proper Sleep & Comfort ✔️ Keep the baby's room cool but avoid direct airflow from AC or fan. ✔️ Use light cotton bed sheets to avoid overheating. When to Be Alert? 🚨 If the baby shows signs of dehydration (dry mouth, no tears while crying, fewer wet diapers, lethargy) or heat rash, consult a doctor immediately.
