New moms have a lot on their shoulders – and in their arms! The angel takes up all your time and energy and you can really do without added anxiety. In India, awareness about baby and mommy nutrition has gone up over time. The environment is now more comfortable than before, thanks to initiatives to support breastfeeding.
When you are getting into your mommying shoes, you need all the support you can gather. You may choose to formula feed or breastfeed your baby but either way, you can do without added stress from the workplace, for instance! These 5 initiatives by India can help ensure an easier time for both you and your baby.
How India Supports Breastfeeding Mommies
1. Breastfeeding Rooms in Public Places
Tamil Nadu recently inaugurated over 300 breastfeeding rooms in public spots like the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT). These air-conditioned rooms can be used by eight mothers at a time. What’s more, the government has also arranged for nurses to provide any assistance. A sigh of relief indeed for moms worried about nursing during travelling!
2. Solving the “Working and Nursing” Tradeoff
In Bihar, the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) is taking steps to protect breastfeeding in India. Since employees have a hard time breastfeeding on the job, the hospital has created a special room for this purpose. Not just that, the hospital is also working on implementing the six-month maternity leave rule.
3. Digital Mass Education for Women and Children
More often than not, a lack of education is the culprit behind malnutrition and illness. In June this year, the Women and Child Development Ministry launched the “IAP HealthPhone” programme to spread awareness about breastfeeding and the importance of a balanced diet. Like they say, education is the best revolution!
4. Tele-Support for Nursing Mommies
Not all moms have access to medical facilities or specialized assistance. Recognizing this, the Tamil Nadu government is making a concerted initiative to support breastfeeding and educate women in rural areas. Through a phone help line, women can get advice on nursing, nutrition and also seek support on their babies’ health.
5. Implementing Maternity Leave Benefits
The Indian government has renewed focus on implementing the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961 which guarantees three months’ leave with wages for pregnant employees. This is indeed a welcome move that will keep new moms breathing easy about their career. After all, they have a lot on their plate just now, right from feeding the baby to handling new parent responsibilities.
India is aiming to raise a healthier and happier future generation. These activities to help nursing mothers in India help ensure that both breastfeeding mommies and their little ones are healthy and safe. Education and support are paramount, irrespective of whether you choose to breastfeed or formula-feed your little bundle of joy!
