A. It seems like your 5-month-old son is experiencing some discomfort from teething. Teething is a common developmental milestone, and while it can be uncomfortable for babies, it's usually not harmful. Here's what you can do to help soothe your baby during this time: Teething Symptoms: Sore Gums: Your baby might have swollen or sore gums where the teeth are coming through. Drooling: Increased drooling is common when teething. Irritability: Teething can cause discomfort, which might make your baby fussy or irritable. Chewing: Babies often chew on things to relieve the pressure in their gums. Ways to Soothe Your Baby: Teething Rings: Give your baby a cold teething ring to chew on. The cold can numb the sore area and provide relief. Cold Washcloth: Wet a washcloth, put it in the fridge for a short while, and then allow your baby to chew on it. The coolness can help soothe the gums. Massage the Gums: Gently massage your baby's gums with a clean finger. This can help alleviate the discomfort. Pain Relief: If your baby seems very uncomfortable, consult your pediatrician about using infant-safe pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Distraction: Sometimes, offering toys, a favorite blanket, or a change of scenery can distract your baby from the discomfort. Teething typically starts around 6 months, but it’s not unusual for babies to begin the process a little earlier or later. If your baby is showing signs of fever, severe pain, or other concerning symptoms, it’s best to consult your pediatrician for guidance.
