A. It can be concerning if your 18-month-old is refusing to drink water, but it’s not uncommon for toddlers to go through phases of being picky about drinks. Here are a few suggestions to help encourage your daughter to drink water: 1. Make it Fun: Use a colorful cup, straw, or a fun sippy cup to make drinking water more appealing. Sometimes, a change in the drinking vessel can grab their attention. 2. Offer Small Amounts Frequently: Rather than offering a large amount of water all at once, try giving her small sips throughout the day. This might be less overwhelming for her. 3. Flavored Water: You can try adding a splash of natural flavor to the water, like a little bit of fresh fruit or a few drops of lemon or cucumber. Be sure to keep it minimal and natural to avoid added sugars. 4. Hydrating Foods: Include water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumber, oranges, or soups to help keep her hydrated. 5. Lead by Example: Drink water in front of her and make it part of the routine so she sees you doing it too. 6. Avoid Pressure: Don’t force her to drink, as it may create a negative association with water. Instead, gently encourage her with positive reinforcement when she does drink. If this continues for a long period or if she shows signs of dehydration (like fewer wet diapers, dry mouth, or lethargy), it’s important to consult your pediatrician for further guidance.
