Some brands of gripe water contain alcohol, artificial sweeteners and sodium bicarbonate which are not recommended for babies. When sodium bicarbonate is fed in a large quantity, it may cause alkalosis and milk alkali syndrome. Gripe water may also contain vegetable carbons, parabens or dairy products that ideally should be avoided.
