The Perks of Being Brought up in a Joint Family: How It Helped in My Child's Upbringing

The Perks of Being Brought up in a Joint Family: How It Helped in My Child’s Upbringing

I was brought up in a joint family which includes my grandparents, uncles, aunts, and multiple cousins.

My youngest cousin is four years old, so you can imagine the age gaps that run in my family. Being the eldest of all the children turned into an advantage for me in bringing up my daughter, who turned a year old on 4th January 2021.

The few things that I knew about pregnancy was that you eat more, you feel nauseous, dizzy, and of course, your belly grows to make room for your baby. I was prepared in a certain way for these things but there were many other aspects that I only got to know when I got pregnant like morning sickness, heightened sense of smell, mood swings, and many more. Pregnancy is a package in itself and it is different for every individual.

I had little to less knowledge about pregnancy but I was well aware of the facts in taking care of the baby. I had a complete blueprint ready in my mind about how I am going take care of my child, as I had seen varied scenarios of my aunts taking care of my cousins. From how I will take my baby in my arms, to giving a bath, changing clothes and diapers, etc. I knew everything and trust me it helped me a lot. First food, every home remedy in taking care of a sick baby, and many more.

I had known every aspect of my baby’s every first. I find myself lucky enough to have known all this and because of it, I was able to take care of my baby in a smooth manner.

I had prepared her timetable and confined myself to follow that timetable strictly. This proved my only way to take out time for myself and complete other tasks and rest for a while. In the beginning, noting my daughter’s timetable was a task for me but when I had noted her timetable everything seemed easy for me.

The joint family is rare nowadays but if you have one then trust me you are blessed.

Those who don’t live in joint families don’t get disheartened. A mother can never do anything wrong for her children. It might take a while for you to handle it but once
you get a hold of it, that will be a cakewalk for you.

Good luck to all the mothers and me as well. Stay safe. Stay healthy.
