A Letter to My Daughter on International Women's Day

A Letter to My Daughter on International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is celebrated all over the globe on 8th March every year. It’s a day to acknowledge achievements by women in every field. It’s a day to celebrate their willpower, courage and determination. Having a daughter is like having a best friend for life. As I write this letter to you my dear daughter, I imagine you progressing from a tiny tot to a young woman. And I want you to remember what I’m going to say.

1. Don’t Ever Neglect Yourself

“Carve out and claim the time to care for yourself and kindle your own fire.” – Amy IppolitI. When you have a family, love them all but not at the cost of your happiness. You owe yourself the love that you so freely give to others. Find ways to be happy and remember, you don’t have to necessarily make sacrifices to keep others happy.

2. Take Charge of Your Health and Happiness

Don’t depend on others to walk up to you and play the music of happiness – let it flow from within. Follow your passion and make time for your interests. Go learn that guitar, groove to that song, cook that exotic dish, sketch that portrait, sing that song loudly. It’s all worth it, darling!

3. Make Time for Your Girlfriends

These women will be the ones with whom you can spend your sunny afternoons and rainy days. These friends will listen to you when you need them to – without judgements and without prejudice.

4. You Are Equal to Men

How I wish that one day you laugh hard that gender disparity existed! I want you to know that your father and I have never believed in differential upbringing and that you and your brother are equals – no less, no more. So walk with your chin up!

5. Read Good Books

Let the vastness of knowledge empower you in infinite ways. With each extra candle that you blow every year, may you add a new perspective and an additional dimension to your character. Let books be amongst the brightest of lights to guide you, my child! Love..
