A. Your toddler's mouth bacteria feed on sugars from sweet and starchy foods to form plaque on your little one's gums and teeth. The plaque hardens into tartar, leading to tooth decay and gingivitis. Gingivitis inflames gum tissue and will bleed when brushed. Regular cleanings by a dentist can help fight gingivitis, the mildest form of gum disease. Your child will also need to brush and floss daily. Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing). This treatment can help remove the plaque and tartar under the gum and infected tissue in the early stages of the disease.
