A. Watery eyes in infants can be caused by several factors, but the most common reason is a blocked tear duct. Here’s what might be happening: 1. **Blocked Tear Ducts (Nasolacrimal Duct Obstruction):** This condition is common in newborns and can cause one or both eyes to water. Tear ducts can be partially or fully blocked, preventing tears from draining properly and leading to watery eyes. 2. **Infection:** If there is redness, swelling, or discharge in addition to watery eyes, it could indicate an eye infection such as conjunctivitis. 3. **Irritation:** Environmental factors such as wind, dust, or bright light can cause temporary irritation and watering of the eyes. ### Steps to Help Manage Watery Eyes: 1. **Gentle Massage:** You can gently massage the tear duct area to help open up the blockage. Use a clean finger to apply gentle pressure in a circular motion on the side of the nose, just below the inner corner of the eye. Do this a few times a day. 2. **Keep the Eye Clean:** Use a clean, warm, damp cloth to gently wipe away any discharge. Always wipe from the inside corner of the eye outward to prevent spreading any potential infection. 3. **Avoid Irritants:** Keep your baby away from potential irritants like smoke, dust, or bright lights. ### When to See a Doctor: - If the watery eye persists beyond a few months. - If there is any redness, swelling, or yellow-green discharge. - If the baby seems to be in discomfort or if the condition worsens. Seeing a pediatrician or an ophthalmologist will help determine the exact cause and provide appropriate treatment if necessary.
