Q.

My baby is 1 year 11 months old. Doctor suggested mucolite 5 ml three times daily for her cold problem. when I read the dosage in the mucolite bottle, it is mentioned only for kids above 2 years. And dosage 2.5ml three times for 2 year - 5 year and 5ml twice daily for 5 year to 10 year. Can somebody please suggest whether doctor prescribed dosage is more of my baby or can it be given.

A. Cold most of the time is a viral illness where there could be running nose sneezing along with cough and it needs supportive care along with proper hydration . steam inhalation will also be useful in this . cough needs to be treated with anti allergic and expectorant bronchodilators or antitussives medicine which should be used once a proper evaluation by the doctor is done antd according to the type of cough its prescribed. if any fevter is there paracetamol can be given to reduce the temperature and the dose can be repeated again after 6 hours if required .
