A. It's common for some umbilical cords to leave a bit of moisture or discharge after they fall off, as the area continues to heal. Here are some steps to help ensure your baby’s belly button stays clean and heals properly: 1. Keep it Dry: Gently pat the area dry after baths, and avoid using creams or ointments unless prescribed by a doctor, as these can delay drying. 2. Use Rubbing Alcohol if Recommended: Some pediatricians suggest cleaning the area with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to help dry it out, but only do this if your doctor advises. 3. Avoid Covering the Area: Keep diapers folded below the belly button to allow air to reach it, helping it dry out faster. 4. Check for Signs of Infection: Watch for symptoms like redness, swelling, foul odor, or increased discharge, which may suggest an infection and require medical attention. If the area remains persistently wet or if there are signs of infection, it’s best to consult a pediatrician. Sometimes, a moist belly button may indicate a minor issue like an umbilical granuloma, which can be easily treated by a doctor if needed.
