1. Abdominal Ultrasound:
Empty stomach: Usually, for an abdominal ultrasound (especially if it's to check the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, etc.), you may be asked to fast for 6–8 hours before the procedure. This ensures that your stomach is empty, and the ultrasound images are clearer.
2. Pelvic Ultrasound:
Full bladder: If you're having a pelvic ultrasound (such as for checking the uterus, ovaries, or prostate), you might be asked to drink plenty of water before the test and come with a full bladder. This helps in getting better images.
3. Pregnancy Ultrasound:
Empty stomach: For an early pregnancy ultrasound (especially in the first trimester), you might be asked to come with a full bladder for a transabdominal ultrasound. For later pregnancy scans (second or third trimester), a full bladder might not be necessary.
For a transvaginal ultrasound (in early pregnancy), an empty stomach is usually not required, but the bladder might need to be somewhat full.
4. Other Specific Ultrasounds:
Certain other ultrasounds (like for the thyroid, breasts, etc.) generally do not require fasting or a full stomach.
It's always best to follow the specific instructions given by your doctor or the ultrasound technician, as requirements can vary based on the type of ultrasound you're having. If you're unsure, check with the clinic or your doctor ahead of time.
