A. It’s generally recommended to wait until your baby is 6 months old before introducing solid foods, including purees. At 4 months and 4 days, your baby’s digestive system is still developing, and breast milk or formula provides all the necessary nutrients for growth and development. However, in some cases, pediatricians may suggest starting solids earlier (around 4-6 months) based on a baby’s readiness.
Signs Your Baby May Be Ready for Solids:
1. Good Head Control: Your baby can hold their head up steadily.
2. Sitting with Support: Your baby can sit upright with minimal assistance.
3. Interest in Food: Your baby shows curiosity, such as watching you eat or reaching for food.
4. Reduced Tongue-Thrust Reflex: The reflex that pushes food out of the mouth diminishes.
If Your Pediatrician Approves Starting Purees Early:
Begin with single-ingredient, smooth purees, such as:
Mashed banana
Steamed and pureed carrot, pumpkin, or sweet potato
Rice cereal mixed with breast milk or formula
Introduce one food at a time, waiting 3-5 days before offering a new food to monitor for allergies or intolerances.
Important Considerations:
No Cow's Milk or Honey: Avoid these until after 12 months.
Avoid Salt and Sugar: Do not add salt, sugar, or spices to baby food.
Continue breastfeeding or formula feeding as the main source of nutrition until 12 months.
Before introducing solids, consult with your pediatrician to ensure it’s the right time for your baby.
