A. It sounds like your 17-month-old has been dealing with a cold and fever for a few days, and while medications are helping temporarily, the fever is persisting. A temperature of 99.2°F (underarm) is considered a low-grade fever, which can be common with viral infections, especially colds. Here are a few things to consider before deciding on a blood test: 1. Duration of Fever: If the fever has persisted for more than 3 days, it’s a good idea to consult your pediatrician. They may recommend a blood test to rule out any bacterial infection, but it depends on other symptoms as well. 2. Other Symptoms: Watch for additional symptoms like difficulty breathing, dehydration (less wet diapers), unusual lethargy, or if the fever goes above 100.4°F (underarm). These might indicate the need for further tests or treatment. 3. Hydration and Rest: Ensure she stays well-hydrated and gets enough rest. Keep offering fluids like water, soup, or oral rehydration solutions. 4. Consult a Doctor: Since the fever is lingering, it’s advisable to consult her pediatrician. They can determine whether a blood test or other investigations are necessary based on her overall condition. If the fever persists or if there are any new concerning symptoms, it’s always better to err on the side of caution and seek medical advice.
