A. At 5 months old, babies are typically transitioning to solid foods while still primarily relying on breast milk or formula for nutrition. Here are some suitable Indian foods to introduce to your 5-month-old baby: 1. Rice Cereal: Cooked rice cereal or rice porridge made with well-cooked rice and water or breast milk/formula can be a gentle first food for your baby. 2. Dal Water: Introduce mild lentil soup or dal water made by boiling well-cooked lentils with water and straining out the solids. Start with a thin consistency and gradually thicken it as your baby gets used to it. 3. Vegetable Purees: Start with single-ingredient vegetable purees such as mashed potatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, or bottle gourd (lauki). Steam or boil the vegetables until soft, then mash or puree them to a smooth consistency. 4. Fruit Purees: Offer mashed or pureed fruits such as banana, apple, pear, or mashed ripe papaya. These can be easily digested and provide essential vitamins and minerals. 5. Ragi Porridge: Ragi (finger millet) porridge is a nutritious option rich in iron and calcium. Cook ragi flour with water or breast milk/formula to a thin consistency and feed it to your baby. 6. Homemade Cerelac: Prepare homemade cerelac by grinding a combination of rice, dal, and mixed vegetables into a fine powder. Cook the powder with water or milk to a smooth consistency and feed it to your baby. Remember to introduce one new food at a time and wait for a few days before introducing another to monitor for any signs of allergies or intolerances. Always ensure that the foods are cooked well, mashed or pureed to a suitable consistency, and served at a lukewarm temperature. Additionally, consult with your pediatrician before introducing solid foods to your baby and follow their guidance based on your baby's individual needs and developmental readiness.
