#asktheexpert My baby has a swelled belly button and its not going down. She has had it since birth and previous child also had same problem but her belly button became proper in the 1st year itself. Should i be worried?

A. the child is having umbilical hernia which is very common in children and goes away by maximum 2 years of age.x with growing age it regresses and goes inside it does not rzequire any intervention or treatment before 2 years if it is non complicated. meet your doctor once who will tell you whether any intervention or wait and watch policy is required

A. Most umbilical hernias are nothing to worry about, and go away without medical treatment by the time a child is 4–5 years old. Surgery is done only if: the hernia doesn't close by age 4 or 5. the hernia becomes incarcerated (can't be easily reduced)
