How to Select & Store Blueberries for Baby Food?

One potential hurdle is the ability to choose blueberries and the knowledge of how to store them. It is recommended that you buy fresh, organically grown blueberries. They are the ones with the most nutritional value and are known to have the least chance of any side effects. To ensure you are buying organic blueberries, look for an organically certified sticker on the packaging. To make sure they are fresh, buy blueberries that are dark blue in colour, and ensure they can roll freely and are firm but are not hard. If these criteria do not match, the blueberries are stale. To store blueberries, simply wash them thoroughly and store them in your refrigerator at a temperature between 0-3 degrees Celsius.

If you are buying frozen blueberries, ensure that they are well within the expiry date. If there is no manufactured and expiry date mentioned on the packaging, do not buy it. Ensure the packaging of the frozen blueberries is sealed tightly. When you open the packaging, re-freeze the berries in an airtight zip-lock bag.

How to Prepare Blueberry for Baby-Led Weaning?

For 6 Month Old

  • Begin by steaming or lightly cooking whole blueberries to soften them and reduce the risk of choking.
  • Once softened, offer the blueberries to your baby in a size and shape that they can easily grasp, such as halved or quartered.

For 9 Months

  • As your baby becomes more adept at chewing and swallowing, you can gradually introduce mashed or smashed blueberries without cooking.
  • Ensure that the blueberries are ripe and soft to minimize the risk of choking, and always supervise your baby closely during mealtimes.

For 1+ Years

  • By this stage, your baby should be able to handle whole blueberries without any modifications.
  • Offer fresh, whole blueberries as a nutritious finger food or add them to other dishes like oatmeal or yogurt for added flavor and texture.
  • Remember to continue supervising your baby while they eat to prevent choking hazards and promote safe eating habits.
