Common signs a baby may be ready include:
Good head and neck control
Can sit with little support
Shows interest in food (watching you eat, reaching for food)
Opens mouth when food is offered
Reduced tongue-thrust reflex (not automatically pushing food out)
Start with simple, soft foods such as:
Iron-rich foods first: mashed or pureed lentils, fortified baby cereal, mashed beans, soft cooked egg (if tolerated), pureed meat
Mashed fruits: banana, avocado, stewed apple
Soft vegetables: sweet potato, carrot, pumpkin
