POOJA KOTHARIMom of a 8 yr 5 m old boy7 months agoA. For a 5-month, 20-day-old baby, breast milk or formula should still be the primary source of nutrition. However, if your pediatrician has advised starting solids early, you can introduce single-ingredient, easily digestible foods in small amounts.
Best Time to Feed
At this stage, feeding solids is just for practice, not for nutrition. You can offer solids once a day, preferably:
✔ Mid-morning (10 AM - 12 PM) – Baby is active, and you can monitor any reactions.
✔ Early afternoon (2 PM - 4 PM) – If morning is not convenient.
Feeding Schedule Example
⏰ 7 AM - 8 AM → Breast milk/formula
⏰ 10 AM - 12 PM → Small amount of mashed food (if started)
⏰ 2 PM - 4 PM → Breast milk/formula
⏰ 6 PM - 7 PM → Breast milk/formula
⏰ 10 PM - 11 PM → Breast milk/formula (before bedtime)
First Foods to Try
✔ Mashed banana
✔ Steamed and pureed apple or pear
✔ Rice cereal (homemade or iron-fortified)
✔ Moong dal water
✔ Boiled and mashed carrot or sweet potato
⚠ Things to Remember
Introduce only one new food at a time and wait 3-5 days before trying another. Avoid salt, sugar, honey, and cow’s milk. Continue breastfeeding/formula as the main food.
