Q.

My son is 3month 21days old, there's a funsi like on his left arm at bcg vaccine point. How it'll be cured, is it harmful? What should be ideal weight at this age, his birth time weight was 3.3kg and weight at 3.5month vaccine was 5.3kg. If he's underweight, how to increase his weight? He is on exclusive breastfeeding

A. You're doing a great job caring for your baby! Let's go through each of your concerns one by one with clear answers: 🦠 1. BCG Vaccine Site – Fungal-like Appearance At the BCG (Bacillus Calmette–Guérin) vaccination site, it's common for some babies to develop: A small swelling or nodule, Sometimes it forms a pus-filled boil or ulcer after a few weeks or months, Eventually, it forms a scar. ⚠️ However, if it looks like a fungal infection (red, round, itchy, spreading rash), then it might not be due to the vaccine itself. ✅ What You Can Do: If it is not oozing pus, red, or warm, and your baby is otherwise well — just observe. It should heal on its own. Don't apply powder or cream without a doctor’s advice. If it looks like a spreading infection (with pus, redness, fever, or baby is irritable), show it to a pediatrician. A topical antifungal or mild antibiotic ointment may be needed. ⚖️ 2. Ideal Weight for 3 Month 21 Days Old Baby Your baby is: Birth weight: 3.3 kg Current weight (at 3.5 months): 5.3 kg 🧮 Expected Weight Gain: Babies typically double their birth weight by 5–6 months. For a 3.3 kg birth weight, ideal weight by now ≈ 5.5 to 6.2 kg. 👉 So, 5.3 kg is slightly on the lower side, but not alarming, especially if: Baby is active, Feeding well, Meeting milestones (like social smiling, moving arms/legs actively), and Having 6–8 wet diapers per day. 🍼 3. How to Increase Baby's Weight (Exclusive Breastfeeding)? You're doing the best thing by exclusively breastfeeding! To support better weight gain: ✅ What You Can Do: Ensure proper latch – A deep latch helps baby get more hindmilk (which is high in fat). Feed on demand – Every 2–3 hours during the day and at least 1–2 times at night. Let baby finish one breast fully before switching to the other — this ensures baby gets the fat-rich hindmilk. Skin-to-skin contact – Boosts baby’s growth hormones and encourages more feeding. Mother’s nutrition – Eat well-balanced, high-calorie meals including: Ghee, dry fruits, milk, dal, rice, whole grains Stay well-hydrated 🚨 When to Worry: If baby is very sleepy, not feeding well, Not gaining at least 20–30 grams per day, Not reaching developmental milestones — then a pediatric review is important. ❤️ Summary: BCG site swelling is usually normal. Only seek treatment if signs of infection appear. Weight is slightly below average but acceptable. Continue exclusive breastfeeding with good technique. No need for formula or supplements unless advised by a doctor
