ExpertDr. Minal AcharyaNutritionist2 years agoA. dear Mum, breastfeeding should be stopped gradually.
Ensure that the child eats enough; increase the number of meals.
Increase interval between breastfeeds. Drop one feed every day per week. Taper over 2-3 months.
Stop morning breastfeeds first, then afternoon feeds after 2 - 3 weeks. Avoid situations that remind the baby of the breast: other family members and father can help with feeding and putting child to sleep.
The nighttime feeding is usually the last to go. Make a bedtime routine not centered around breastfeeding. read a good book which may eventually become more important than a long session at the breast , rub the child's back, sing lullaby. Your child may agree to rest his head on your breast instead of feeding. Talk to your child about what's going on. He may understand more than you think.
A lot of extra love and attention in other forms will be needed now.
