Q.

My 5 year old boy wakes up in the night and cries, we can't help him. After crying for 2-3 minutes, he again sleeps and doesn't remember in the morning. How to deal with this situation.

A. Your 5-year-old’s nighttime crying followed by not remembering it in the morning may be due to sleep terrors (a type of parasomnia). These episodes often happen in deep sleep within the first few hours of the night and can involve crying, fear, or confusion. Unlike nightmares, children usually don’t fully wake up or remember the event. These are common at this age and often triggered by overtiredness, stress, fever, or irregular sleep schedules. To help, ensure he gets enough sleep, keep a calm bedtime routine, and avoid screen time before bed. Most children outgrow this with time, but if it becomes frequent or intense, consult a pediatrician.
