A. I'm sorry to hear that your baby is having trouble drinking milk and experiencing colic pain. Here are some suggestions that may help: ### 1. **Feeding Frequency and Quantity** - **Feeding Every 4-5 Hours:** At 5 months, feeding every 4-5 hours can be normal for some babies, especially if they are taking in a good amount during each feed. However, the amount your baby is drinking (100-120 ml per feed) seems slightly less than the typical range for a 5-month-old, which is usually around 150-180 ml per feed, but this can vary. - **Smaller, More Frequent Feeds:** Try offering smaller feeds more frequently. Sometimes, babies drink better when they are less hungry, as they might get frustrated if they are too hungry and not getting enough milk quickly. ### 2. **Improving Burping** - **Different Positions for Burping:** If your baby is not burping well, try different positions: - **Over-the-Shoulder:** Hold your baby upright with their head resting on your shoulder and gently pat or rub their back. - **Sitting on Your Lap:** Sit your baby on your lap, supporting their chest and head with one hand while patting their back with the other. - **Lying on Your Lap:** Lay your baby face-down on your lap, supporting their head and ensuring it is higher than their chest, and gently pat their back. - **Gentle Movements:** Sometimes, gentle rocking, walking, or bouncing can help release trapped gas. You can also try tummy time (laying your baby on their stomach while awake and supervised), as this can help expel gas. ### 3. **Dealing with Colic Pain** - **Anti-Colic Formula:** Consider using an anti-colic formula that is specifically designed to reduce gas and discomfort. - **Bicycle Legs:** Lay your baby on their back and gently move their legs in a bicycling motion to help release trapped gas. - **Warm Compress:** A warm compress or a warm bath can soothe your baby’s tummy and help relieve colic pain. - **Colic Drops or Probiotics:** Some parents find relief using colic drops or probiotics, but always consult with your pediatrician before introducing any new medications or supplements. ### 4. **Check for Other Causes** - **Reflux:** Some babies refuse milk or drink less because of reflux or discomfort. If your baby seems uncomfortable during feeds or arches their back, discuss reflux with your pediatrician. - **Teething:** At 5 months, teething may start, and some babies refuse feeds due to gum discomfort. Check if your baby is showing signs of teething, such as drooling, biting, or gum swelling. ### 5. **Consult Your Pediatrician** - **Rule Out Underlying Conditions:** If your baby continues to refuse milk or seems uncomfortable, it is crucial to consult your pediatrician to rule out any underlying issues, such as allergies, intolerances, or reflux. It’s great that you are attentive to your baby’s needs and trying different methods. Sometimes, it can take a bit of experimentation to find what works best. If the situation doesn’t improve or you have any concerns, please reach out to your pediatrician for personalized advice.
