POOJA KOTHARIMom of a 8 yr 6 m old boy1 Year agoA. While it's essential to consult with a healthcare professional for advice on treating a newborn's cold, there are some gentle home remedies commonly used in Indian households. Please note that these remedies should be used cautiously, and if your baby's symptoms persist or worsen, seek prompt medical attention. Here are a few home remedies:
1. **Nasal Saline Drops:**
- Use saline drops to clear nasal congestion. Place a couple of drops in each nostril and suction gently with a bulb syringe to remove mucus.
2. **Turmeric and Milk:**
- Mix a pinch of turmeric powder into warm milk. Turmeric has natural anti-inflammatory properties that may help soothe a sore throat.
3. **Warm Mustard Oil Massage:**
- Gently massage the baby's chest, back, and feet with warm mustard oil. Ensure the oil is not too hot. This can provide relief and improve circulation.
4. **Ajwain (Carom Seeds) Steam:**
- Boil water with ajwain (carom seeds) and allow your baby to inhale the steam. The antimicrobial properties of ajwain may help clear nasal passages.
5. **Honey and Tulsi (Holy Basil) Paste:**
- Mix a small amount of honey with crushed tulsi leaves to make a paste. Administer a tiny bit, ensuring the baby is at least one year old.
6. **Elevate the Head:**
- Elevate your baby's head slightly while sleeping to ease breathing. You can do this by placing a rolled towel under the mattress.
7. **Hydration:**
- Ensure your baby stays hydrated by offering breast milk or formula regularly. Proper hydration helps in relieving congestion.
8. **Warm Water Bath:**
- A warm water bath can be soothing. Make sure the water is comfortably warm and not too hot.
9. **Use a Humidifier:**
- Using a humidifier in the baby's room can add moisture to the air, helping to relieve nasal congestion.
10. **Avoid Exposure to Smoke:**
- Keep your baby away from smoke as it can worsen respiratory symptoms.
Always consult with your pediatrician before trying any home remedies, especially for newborns. They can provide guidance based on your baby's specific condition and medical history. If your baby exhibits severe symptoms or if you are unsure, seek medical attention promptly.
