Q.

My 16-month-old daughter has recently been refusing to eat or is eating very little. She used to eat better before. I'm concerned about her nutrition and growth. Could this be a phase, or should I be worried? What can I do to encourage her to eat?

A. It’s common for toddlers around 16 months to suddenly eat less or become picky, especially as their growth rate slows and they become more independent. This phase is usually normal. Offer a variety of healthy foods without forcing her to eat, keep mealtimes stress-free, and maintain a regular meal and snack schedule. Avoid distractions like screens during meals. If she’s active, growing well, and doesn’t seem sick, there’s usually no need to worry. However, if you notice weight loss, weakness, or signs of illness, consult your pediatrician for further evaluation.
