A. Elevated prolactin levels (hyperprolactinemia) can interfere with ovulation and thus affect your ability to conceive. A prolactin level of 36 is slightly elevated and may need attention. Here are steps you can take to address this issue:
### 1. **Consult a Healthcare Professional**
- **Endocrinologist or Gynecologist**: They can determine the cause of elevated prolactin and recommend appropriate treatment.
### 2. **Medications**
- **Dopamine Agonists**: Drugs like bromocriptine and cabergoline are commonly prescribed to lower prolactin levels.
### 3. **Lifestyle Changes**
- **Reduce Stress**: High stress levels can increase prolactin production.
- **Balanced Diet**: Ensure a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
- **Regular Exercise**: Moderate physical activity can help regulate hormones.
### 4. **Identify and Manage Underlying Conditions**
- **Thyroid Function**: Hypothyroidism can cause elevated prolactin. Ensure your thyroid levels are normal.
- **Pituitary Gland**: In rare cases, a pituitary tumor can cause high prolactin. Imaging tests like an MRI may be necessary.
### 5. **Monitor Prolactin Levels**
- **Regular Testing**: Your doctor may recommend periodic blood tests to monitor your prolactin levels and adjust treatment as needed.
### 6. **Avoid Prolactin Stimulants**
- **Certain Medications**: Avoid medications that can raise prolactin levels, such as some antipsychotics, antidepressants, and antiemetics.
- **Herbal Supplements**: Some herbs, like fenugreek and fennel, may increase prolactin.
### 7. **Improve Fertility Naturally**
- **Track Ovulation**: Use ovulation predictor kits, basal body temperature charting, or fertility tracking apps to identify your fertile window.
- **Healthy Weight**: Maintain a healthy weight, as being underweight or overweight can affect ovulation.
- **Fertility-Friendly Practices**: Avoid smoking, limit alcohol intake, and reduce caffeine consumption.
### 8. **Patience and Persistence**
- It can take several months for prolactin-lowering treatments to take effect. Continue following your doctor's advice and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
If you have been trying to conceive for over a year (or six months if you are over 35), it may be time to seek further evaluation from a fertility specialist. They can provide a comprehensive assessment and additional treatment options tailored to your situation.
