A. Introducing solid foods to your baby after completing 6 months is an exciting milestone! At this stage, breast milk or formula will still be the primary source of nutrition, but introducing solids helps the baby get used to new flavors and textures. Here are some tips and ideas on how to introduce solid foods: 1. Start with Single-Ingredient Purees Begin with simple, easily digestible foods: Vegetable purees: Steamed and mashed carrots, sweet potatoes, or peas. Fruit purees: Mashed bananas, avocados, or steamed apples and pears. Cereals: Iron-fortified single-grain baby cereals like rice, oats, or barley mixed with breast milk or formula for a smooth consistency. 2. Follow the 3-Day Rule Introduce one new food at a time and wait for 3-4 days before introducing another new food. This will help you monitor any potential allergies or digestive issues. 3. Gradually Increase Texture As your baby becomes accustomed to purees, you can slowly introduce more textured foods: Move from smooth purees to mashed or lumpy textures. Offer small soft pieces of food like well-cooked vegetables or small fruit chunks (like very soft banana pieces). 4. Offer Variety Once your baby is comfortable with single foods, you can start combining foods for more variety: Vegetable combinations: Peas and carrots, spinach and sweet potato. Fruit combinations: Banana and avocado, apple and pear. Cereal with fruits/vegetables: Oatmeal mixed with mashed banana or rice cereal with carrot puree. 5. Include Protein-Rich Foods By 7-8 months, you can introduce more protein: Lentils and dal: Mashed lentils, moong dal. Egg yolk: Start with fully cooked egg yolk (after consulting your pediatrician). Chicken or fish: Well-cooked, pureed, or mashed chicken or fish. 6. Offer Finger Foods Once your baby starts showing interest in self-feeding, you can introduce soft finger foods: Soft fruits like banana or avocado slices. Cooked vegetable sticks (carrot, sweet potato). Small pieces of soft bread or cooked pasta. 7. Stay Consistent with Breastfeeding/Formula While introducing solids, continue breastfeeding or formula feeding on demand. Solids are complementary to milk at this stage. 8. Create a Routine Offer solids once a day at first, then gradually increase to two or three times a day as your baby shows interest. Always ensure your baby is sitting upright and never leave them unattended while eating. 9. Watch for Hunger and Fullness Cues Let your baby guide you. If they are turning away or not opening their mouth, don’t force-feed. Babies know when they’ve had enough. Foods to Avoid Initially Honey (until after 1 year due to the risk of botulism). Cow's milk as a primary drink (before 1 year), though small amounts can be used in food. Whole nuts, grapes, popcorn, and other choking hazards. Salty or sugary foods. Introducing solids is all about exploring new tastes and textures. Keep mealtime fun and relaxed to help your baby enjoy this new phase.
