POOJA KOTHARIMom of a 8 yr 5 m old boy6 months agoA. A 20-day-old baby staying awake at night is very common and normal. At this stage, babies have an immature sleep cycle, and their internal body clock (circadian rhythm) is not fully developed. Here are possible reasons and ways to help:
Why Your Baby Won't Sleep at Night?
Day-Night Confusion
Newborns don’t yet know the difference between day and night. They may sleep more during the day and stay awake at night.
Hunger
Newborns have small stomachs and need to feed frequently (every 2-3 hours). Even if they are full, they may wake up for comfort nursing.
Gas or Colic
Babies sometimes struggle with digestion, causing discomfort. Signs: Crying, arching back, clenching fists, bloated tummy.
Startle Reflex (Moro Reflex)
Sudden jerks or movements may wake them up. Swaddling can help reduce this.
Diaper Discomfort
A wet or dirty diaper can disturb sleep. Check and change diapers as needed.
Need for Comfort
Some babies wake up looking for warmth, cuddles, or the feeling of being held. Try skin-to-skin contact or gentle rocking. How to Help Your Baby Sleep Better?
✔️ Establish a Nighttime Routine – Dim lights, lower noise, and keep nighttime feeds quiet.
✔️ Expose to Natural Light During the Day – Helps regulate their body clock.
✔️ Use Swaddling – Provides comfort and prevents the startle reflex from waking them.
✔️ Try a Gentle Rocking Motion – A baby swing or gentle back patting can soothe them.
✔️ Ensure a Full Feed Before Bedtime – Helps them sleep a little longer.
✔️ Burp Well After Feeds – Prevents gas buildup that can disturb sleep.
Newborn sleep patterns will slowly improve by 6-8 weeks as their circadian rhythm develops. If your baby is excessively fussy or uncomfortable, let me know, and we can look into other possibilities.
