A. It is common for tonsils to get infected by viruses or bacteria (bacterial tonsillitis is sometimes called strep throat). Tonsillitis is common in children of all ages and often occurs when children have a cold, with a runny nose and a cough. In teenagers, glandular fever can cause severe tonsillitis.Tonsillitis is common in childhood, although rare before the age of 2 years, but in most cases it will clear up after 3–4 days without treatment. Some cases of tonsillitis can be more severe, particularly if they are caused by bacteria, and need treatment from a GP.
