A. It's common for newborns to experience some constipation, especially if you're mixing breastfeeding and formula feeding. Since your baby is 25 days old and experiencing constipation, here are a few steps you can take to help: 1. Offer More Breast Milk Breast milk is a natural laxative, so if possible, try to offer more breast milk to your baby. Cluster feeding (when babies feed more frequently, often in the evenings) is a normal behavior in the early weeks to increase milk supply. Try to feed your baby as often as he desires to help boost your milk production. 2. Ensure Proper Formula Preparation If you're using formula, make sure you're preparing it correctly, following the instructions on the can. Incorrect preparation (too much powder or water) can sometimes cause constipation. You may also consider trying a different formula that may be easier on his digestive system. 3. Gentle Tummy Massage You can try gently massaging your baby’s tummy in a clockwise motion. This can help stimulate the bowels and relieve constipation. You can also try cycling your baby's legs gently as if he's riding a bicycle. This can sometimes help with gas and constipation. 4. Warm Bath A warm bath can help soothe your baby’s tummy and relax his muscles. The warmth might help relieve constipation and make him feel more comfortable. 5. Hydration If your baby is only on formula and breast milk, he's likely getting enough fluids, but if you're concerned about hydration, try offering small, additional feeds of expressed breast milk or formula if he's willing. 6. Positioning During Feeding Sometimes, the way a baby is positioned during breastfeeding or bottle-feeding can affect their digestion. Make sure your baby is in a comfortable, semi-upright position during feeds to reduce the chances of gas buildup or constipation. 7. Consult Your Pediatrician If your baby's constipation persists or if he seems to be in discomfort, it’s always a good idea to consult your pediatrician. They can check if there's an underlying issue and may recommend a gentle solution, like a rectal thermometer or a small amount of diluted prune juice for babies older than a month. 8. Monitor Stool Patterns At 25 days old, your baby may still have some irregularity in stool patterns. However, keep track of his bowel movements, and if he goes more than 48 hours without a bowel movement, it’s worth discussing with your pediatrician. In most cases, newborn constipation resolves on its own or with simple home remedies. Just continue to monitor your baby and ensure he’s getting enough nutrition and hydration.
