A. It sounds like your daughter is progressing in her speech, but it’s helpful to compare her development with typical milestones for her age. Speech Milestones for a 2-Year-8-Month-Old: At this age, most children typically: Use simple sentences of 3 to 4 words (e.g., "I want juice"). Understand and follow simple instructions like "Pick up the toy" or "Put it on the table." Use 50 to 100 words regularly and are adding new words frequently. Engage in short conversations and ask simple questions. Understand most of what is said to them and can express basic needs, emotions, and desires. Based on What You Described: Your daughter can say 2 to 3 words continuously, which is a positive sign. Understanding everything you say is also great, as comprehension typically develops before expressive language. Areas of Improvement: 1. Encouraging More Speech: Since she can already say a few words together, try encouraging her to build longer sentences. You can ask questions or prompt her to describe things like her toys, feelings, or activities. 2. Minimizing Screen Time: While it’s common to use screens during meals, research suggests that too much screen time can interfere with speech development, especially at this critical stage. Try reducing the amount of screen time, and instead engage her in more interactive activities like reading, singing, and talking with you. When she is eating, you could talk to her about her food or the day instead of offering the mobile. 3. Interactive Play: Play activities that encourage her to speak more, like role-playing with dolls, storytelling, or describing what she’s doing, can be beneficial. When to Seek Help: If by age 3: She is not forming sentences of 3-4 words. Her vocabulary is limited (less than 50 words). She struggles to communicate her needs and emotions. There is no noticeable improvement in her speech development. In such cases, it’s helpful to consult with a speech therapist or a pediatrician for guidance. They can help assess whether her speech is developing typically or if she needs additional support. Overall, she seems to be on the right track, but more interactive, screen-free engagement might help further boost her speech development.
