A. Green coloured stools can be due to any green leafy vegetables that the mother consumes like spinach, capsicum and in case the mother is breastfeeding, then these can cause green stools in babies. Formula fed babies also have green coloured stools. If the baby is being given iron supplements, the stools can be green then too. It is also due to imbalance of foremilk and hindmilk while breastfeeding (foremilk is the milk that comes first and it is rich in lactose, hindmilk is the milk that comes at the end and is rich in fat). Make sure that while breastfeeding, the baby empties one breast first before moving on to the next breast, so that baby gets to drink both foremilk and hindmilk. These green stools resolve on their own. In case the stools are not too watery with a foul smell, then there is nothing to worry about.
