A. Flat spots on a baby's head, often called plagiocephaly, are common, especially when babies spend a lot of time lying on their backs. Since your three-month-old has a flat spot on the left side, here are some steps you can take to help correct it: Steps to Help Correct Flat Head: 1. Tummy Time: Ensure your baby has plenty of tummy time during the day while she is awake. This helps reduce pressure on the back of her head and strengthens neck and shoulder muscles. 2. Changing Head Position: Encourage her to turn her head to the right side when she's lying down. You can use toys or bright objects to grab her attention and prompt her to look in the opposite direction. 3. Switching Sleep Position: Try alternating the direction in which you lay your baby in her crib. Babies tend to look toward the room's action, so changing her position may naturally encourage her to turn her head. 4. Holding the Baby: Hold your baby more often instead of letting her lie on her back for prolonged periods, which reduces pressure on her skull. 5. Use of a Special Pillow (if recommended by a doctor): Specially designed pillows can sometimes help with flat head syndrome, but consult your pediatrician before using any products like this. 6. Physical Therapy (if necessary): If your baby shows a strong preference for turning her head to one side (called torticollis), your doctor may recommend physical therapy to help loosen and strengthen the neck muscles. When to See a Doctor: If you don't notice any improvement or if the flat spot worsens, it's essential to consult with your pediatrician. In some cases, severe plagiocephaly might require helmet therapy, but this is generally only used in more extreme cases. Taking these measures early can usually help correct flat head syndrome without needing further intervention.
