Q.

#asktheexpert My 2 years old son consumed a few drops of liquid air freshner in a shopping mall..We have washed his mouth with a lot of water . He had one episode of vomiting. There is no sign of any rash or breathing issue. Let me know if I have to consult a pediatrician. We are on vacation in other country where medical help for kids is very far off.

A. If your two-year-old son consumed a few drops of liquid air freshener, it's good that you acted quickly by rinsing his mouth with water. However, air fresheners can contain chemicals like ethanol, formaldehyde, or essential oils that may be harmful if ingested. Even a small amount can cause symptoms like nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, coughing, or irritation in the mouth and throat. Monitor your child closely for any of these symptoms or unusual behavior. If he shows difficulty breathing, excessive drooling, vomiting, drowsiness, or any signs of distress, you should seek immediate medical attention or go to the nearest emergency room. Even without symptoms, it's advisable to contact your pediatrician or a poison control center for guidance, as some effects might be delayed. Would you like me to help find the nearest poison helpline or emergency care info?
