For a newborn or infant, the normal breathing rate is around 30 to 60 breaths per minute while awake, and it can slow down to 20 to 40 breaths per minute during sleep. Babies may also breathe irregularly—pausing for a few seconds and then breathing faster—which is often normal and called periodic breathing.
If you're concerned about slow breathing, especially if your baby appears pale, has bluish lips, is unusually sleepy, or has difficulty feeding, you should seek immediate medical attention. Always trust your instincts—if something doesn’t feel right, it’s better to check again with your pediatrician.
