A. For a one-year and four-month-old who wakes up frequently at night for breastfeeding, here are some strategies to help reduce night wakings and address tongue development: ### **1. **Establish a Bedtime Routine** - **Consistency**: Create a calming bedtime routine with activities like reading or gentle rocking to signal that it's time to sleep. - **Predictability**: Stick to the same bedtime each night to help regulate your baby's internal clock. ### **2. **Gradually Reduce Night Feedings** - **Cut Back Slowly**: Gradually reduce the amount of breastfeeding during the night. You might replace it with water or a small snack. - **Comfort Alternatives**: Offer comfort through other means, like a favorite toy or gentle patting, to help soothe your baby back to sleep. ### **3. **Ensure Daytime Nutrition** - **Balanced Diet**: Ensure your baby is getting enough to eat during the day with a balanced diet that includes solids and milk. - **Avoid Overfeeding**: Avoid large meals close to bedtime as it might affect sleep. ### **4. **Encourage Self-Soothing** - **Independence**: Encourage your baby to self-soothe by placing them back in the crib drowsy but awake. - **Comfort Items**: Introduce a comfort item like a soft blanket or stuffed animal to help them feel secure. ### **5. **Address Tongue Development** - **Consult a Specialist**: If your baby is not using their tongue effectively, consider consulting a pediatrician or a speech therapist for guidance. - **Play and Interaction**: Engage in activities that encourage tongue movement, like making funny faces or playing with toys that promote oral motor skills. ### **6. **Manage Sleep Environment** - **Comfortable Sleep Space**: Ensure the sleep environment is conducive to rest—comfortable, quiet, and dark. - **Sleep Schedule**: Maintain a consistent nap schedule during the day to help regulate nighttime sleep. By implementing these strategies, you can help reduce night wakings and support your baby’s development. If problems persist, consulting with a pediatrician for personalized advice and support is advisable.
