A. It is common for some toddlers to have a slow weight gain, but if your 1.2-year-old baby is not increasing food intake or weight, you can try the following steps: How to Increase Baby's Appetite & Weight? 1. Offer Energy-Dense & Nutrient-Rich Foods Healthy Fats: Ghee, butter, homemade paneer, peanut butter, almond paste, coconut, and avocado. Protein-Rich Foods: Egg yolk, lentils, dal, curd, cheese, tofu, fish, chicken, and soaked nuts. Carbohydrates: Mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, banana, ragi porridge, and oats. Iron-Rich Foods: Spinach, dates, jaggery, and iron-fortified cereals help improve appetite. 2. Increase Meal Frequency Offer small meals every 2-3 hours instead of 3 big meals. Give nutritious snacks like banana with peanut butter, besan cheela, egg, or fruit smoothies. 3. Avoid Appetite Killers Avoid too much milk (limit to 400-500 ml per day), as excessive milk reduces hunger. Reduce junk food, juices, and sugary snacks that fill the stomach without nutrition. 4. Make Mealtime Fun & Engaging Try different textures & flavors to keep her interested. Allow her to self-feed with finger foods like soft fruits, roti strips, or boiled vegetables. Feed in a calm environment, without distractions like TV or mobile. 5. Include Digestive & Appetite-Boosting Foods Ajwain & Jeera water (1-2 spoons) before meals can help digestion. Soaked raisins or dates in the morning help with digestion and weight gain. Homemade chawanprash (after 1.5 years) can also help. 6. Rule Out Any Underlying Issue If your baby has frequent illnesses, stomach issues, or low energy, consult a pediatrician to check for iron deficiency, gut health, or food intolerance. Try these tips consistently for a few weeks, and you should see improvements in both appetite and weight gain.
