A. For a 21-day-old baby (a newborn), it's crucial to be extremely cautious when administering any kind of medication. At this age, the baby's immune system is still developing, and medications, including those for cold, cough, or loose motion, should only be prescribed by a doctor. General Guidelines for Newborns: Cold and Cough: Babies under 1 month old should generally not be given over-the-counter cough or cold medications. If your baby is showing signs of congestion, you can: Use saline nasal drops (prescribed by your doctor) to help clear the nasal passages. Use a humidifier in the room to keep the air moist. Gently clear the baby’s nose using a nasal aspirator or a bulb syringe. Loose Motion: Diarrhea in newborns can lead to dehydration quickly, so it's essential to consult a pediatrician. In some cases, the doctor may suggest: Oral rehydration solutions (ORS): Make sure the baby stays hydrated, but consult the pediatrician for the correct type and quantity. Important: Never give any medication (including cough syrups, decongestants, or antidiarrheal medicines) to a newborn without consulting a healthcare professional. If your baby has symptoms like a persistent cough, cold, or loose motion, it’s vital to see a pediatrician for proper diagnosis and treatment. When to seek immediate medical attention: If your baby has difficulty breathing, a high fever, or if they are vomiting, seem excessively sleepy, or have dehydration signs (such as fewer wet diapers), you should go to the doctor immediately. It's always safest to consult your pediatrician to make sure your newborn receives the correct care.
