A. It is not uncommon for exclusively breastfed babies to go several days without pooping, as breast milk is easily digested and may leave little waste. However, 9 days is quite a long gap, and combined with crying and discomfort, it may indicate constipation or other issues. Here's what you can do: Steps to Help Your Baby: 1. Check for Signs of Discomfort: If your baby’s abdomen feels hard or swollen, or if she’s straining and appears uncomfortable, it could indicate constipation or gas. 2. Gentle Tummy Massage: Use circular motions on her tummy, moving clockwise. This can help stimulate bowel movements. 3. Leg Exercises: Lay her on her back and gently move her legs in a cycling motion. This may relieve gas and encourage her bowel movement. 4. Warm Bath: A warm bath can relax her muscles, which may help her poop. 5. Monitor Feeding: Continue breastfeeding as usual. If she's formula-fed, discuss the formula type with her pediatrician, as some may cause constipation. 6. Hydration Check: Frequent urination is a good sign that she's hydrated, so focus on observing her stools and discomfort. 7. When to Contact the Doctor: If she still doesn’t poop after trying these methods. If she has a hard or bloated belly. If there’s blood in her stool or diaper. If she continues crying inconsolably. It’s good that she’s active and feeding well, which are reassuring signs. However, consulting a pediatrician is advisable if the situation persists or if she shows additional symptoms of distress.
