A. For a 3-year-old with a cough, it's important to first determine the cause of the cough (e.g., cold, allergies, or viral infection) and consult with a pediatrician before using any medication. However, some general measures and over-the-counter (OTC) remedies that are commonly used to manage mild cough symptoms in children (under the guidance of a doctor) include: 1. Honey: For children over 1 year old, honey can help soothe a cough. You can give 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of honey before bedtime, which may reduce coughing during the night. 2. Saline Nasal Drops: If the cough is due to congestion, saline drops or saline spray can help clear the nasal passages and reduce post-nasal drip, which can trigger coughing. 3. Warm Fluids: Offer warm fluids like water, herbal teas (e.g., chamomile), or warm broths to help soothe the throat and reduce coughing. 4. Cough Syrups: There are several over-the-counter cough syrups formulated for children, such as those containing honey or ingredients like dextromethorphan or guaifenesin. However, always consult with a pediatrician before administering any medicine. 5. Humidifier: Using a cool mist humidifier in your child's room can help keep the air moist, which may ease coughing, especially if the air is dry. 6. Vapor Rub: For older children, you can use a baby-friendly vapor rub on the chest to help soothe congestion. Do not apply it near the face or nostrils. Important: Never give over-the-counter cough or cold medicine containing codeine, dextromethorphan, or other similar ingredients to children under 4 years old without a doctor's recommendation. Additionally, if the cough persists for more than a week, worsens, or is accompanied by a high fever, wheezing, or difficulty breathing, it's crucial to seek medical advice to rule out underlying conditions like asthma, allergies, or infections.
