It’s not uncommon for babies to have soft spots or areas with a softer scalp, especially around the fontanelles (the soft areas on the skull) during their first few years. For a 1 year 4-month-old, the soft spot at the front of the scalp (anterior fontanelle) usually starts closing gradually, but it can remain soft for a while.
However, if you're noticing a soft area specifically on the right side of the scalp, it could be due to a few possible reasons:
1. Normal Soft Spot: If it is near the fontanelle and is still soft, it may be just the normal process of the skull bones gradually fusing as the baby grows.
2. Positional Flatness (Plagiocephaly): If your baby has been lying on one side more often, it can cause the skull to become slightly flatter or uneven. This can make some areas of the scalp feel softer.
3. Bone Development: Sometimes, the bones of the skull may feel slightly softer or more flexible in some areas as they continue to develop.
However, if the soft area is noticeable or has changed in size, or if you're concerned about any unusual tenderness, bulging, or other signs of discomfort, it is best to consult with your pediatrician. They can check for any underlying issues and ensure that the development of your baby’s skull is progressing normally.
