1. Inflammatory Response: Mouth ulcers cause inflammation in the affected area. When the ulcer forms, the body's immune system sends white blood cells to heal the tissue, leading to localized swelling as part of the healing process.
2. Infection: If the ulcer is caused by a viral or bacterial infection, it can lead to swelling, especially if the body is trying to fight off the infection. A swollen lymph node near the ulcer may also appear as part of the immune response.
3. Trauma or Irritation: If the ulcer is caused by accidental biting, sharp foods, or any physical injury to the mouth, it can cause irritation and lead to swelling in the surrounding tissue.
4. Boils or Cysts: Occasionally, a small boil or cyst can develop near or on the ulcer if bacteria get trapped under the skin. This can cause additional swelling and discomfort.
5. Teething: For younger children, teething can sometimes coincide with the development of mouth ulcers, causing both swelling and discomfort.
To manage the swelling, apply soothing treatments like cold compresses, saltwater rinses, and topical gels. If the swelling persists or worsens, or if you notice pus or signs of infection, it’s important to consult a pediatrician or dentist for proper treatment.
