A. Being CMV IgG positive and IgM negative means you have had a past infection with cytomegalovirus (CMV) and have developed antibodies (IgG) to it, but there is no current active infection (since IgM is negative). CMV is a common virus, and it’s true that a large percentage of adults, including pregnant women, are exposed to it at some point in their lives. What It Means for Your Baby: IgG Positive: This indicates a past CMV infection, which is common in about 50-90% of adults. Having IgG antibodies usually provides immunity and protection from reinfection or reactivation of the virus. IgM Negative: This is the key indicator that you do not have an active CMV infection during your pregnancy. This significantly reduces the risk of transmitting the virus to your baby. Is There Any Risk to Your Baby? Since your IgM is negative, you do not have an active CMV infection, which greatly reduces the risk of congenital CMV (CMV passed from mother to baby during pregnancy). Congenital CMV is more likely to occur if the mother has a primary (first-time) infection during pregnancy, which would show up as both IgM and IgG positive. In your case, because you had a past infection (IgG positive) and there is no active infection (IgM negative), the risk to your baby is very low. What You Can Do: Reassurance: Since your test shows a past infection, and the virus is not currently active, your baby is unlikely to be affected. This is very common, and many women who are CMV IgG positive have healthy pregnancies and babies. Discuss with Your Doctor: If you’re still concerned, you can talk to your obstetrician or a specialist in maternal-fetal medicine for additional reassurance. They can monitor the pregnancy and the baby's development as needed. Regular Monitoring: It’s always good to have regular check-ups during pregnancy to monitor the baby's growth and health, which your doctor would already be doing. In conclusion, it’s highly unlikely that your past CMV infection will affect your baby, especially since you do not have an active infection. Lysel technicians are correct in stating that many women have been exposed to CMV, and this is usually not a problem for the baby.
