A. For a 4-month-old baby with a cough, you must proceed with care, as babies this young have delicate systems. Here are some safe tips and home remedies: 1. Hydration and Breastfeeding Continue exclusive breastfeeding or formula feeding as it provides essential hydration and immunity. If the baby has nasal congestion, feeding might be challenging; clear the nasal passages first (see below). 2. Steam Therapy (Indirect) Create a steamy environment in the bathroom by running hot water in the shower. Sit with the baby in the room (not too close to hot water) for 10-15 minutes. It helps loosen mucus and ease breathing. 3. Nasal Saline Drops Use saline drops (available over-the-counter) to relieve nasal congestion. Apply 2-3 drops in each nostril to clear blockages. 4. Gentle Chest Rub Use a baby-safe, mild, non-mentholated rub (like coconut oil with a tiny pinch of turmeric or warm mustard oil infused with garlic) to gently massage the baby's chest and back. Avoid using menthol-based products or strong-smelling balms. 5. Elevate Baby’s Head While Sleeping Slightly elevate the baby’s head during sleep by placing a towel under the mattress. This can reduce postnasal drip and ease breathing. 6. Humidity in the Room Use a cool-mist humidifier to maintain moisture in the air and prevent the baby’s airways from drying out. 7. Keep the Environment Clean Ensure the baby’s room is dust-free and avoid exposing the baby to smoke, strong perfumes, or allergens. 8. Monitor Symptoms If the baby’s cough persists for more than 3-4 days, worsens, or is accompanied by high fever, wheezing, or difficulty breathing, consult a pediatrician immediately. Cautions Do not give honey to a baby under one year due to the risk of botulism. Avoid over-the-counter cough syrups or medications without a doctor's advice. Always prioritize consulting your pediatrician for persistent or severe symptoms.
