A. Adenoid problems in a 6-year-old child do not always require surgery. Surgery (called adenoidectomy) is only recommended in certain cases when the enlarged adenoids are causing significant or ongoing issues. ✅ When Surgery May Not Be Needed: Mild to moderate symptoms No frequent ear infections or sinus infections Child breathes okay through the nose most of the time Sleep is not severely disturbed In such cases, doctors may first try medications like: Nasal sprays (like steroid sprays) Antihistamines or anti-allergy medicines Monitoring over time, as adenoids may shrink with age ❌ When Surgery Is Usually Recommended: Severe nasal blockage (mouth breathing all the time) Loud snoring, restless sleep, or sleep apnea (pauses in breathing during sleep) Frequent ear infections or fluid in the ears affecting hearing Recurrent sinus infections that don’t respond to treatment ✅ What You Should Do: Get an ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) specialist opinion. If you haven’t already, ask for a nasal endoscopy or X-ray to confirm how enlarged the adenoids are. Discuss trying medical treatment first if the symptoms are not severe. Surgery is safe when needed, but it should not be rushed into unless clearly necessary. If you'd like, I can guide you on questions to ask your ENT doctor.
